Sculpture Assignment #1 writing

Freddie Lamoreaux
Intro to Sculpture
Assignment 1

Formtography by Harry Abramson is a article that is about the history about digital sculpture. It shows how digital sculpture began, and the process of its expansion into todays world. It states the different possibilities that digital sculpture and technology can do for an artist, and the history of art. Its a way that artist can create a massive amount of matter and create something that they can only dream about. Formtography is based on three areas that are three-dimensional , data capture, and digital sculpting or digital modeling which create these digital sculptures you see today. Formtography started from the simple idea of Pixars Toy Story. Historians can also use this method of sculpting by restoring artifacts that are extremely fragile such as the Normandy Liberty Bell and the Unknown Solider in Arlington.
How large is the largest you can create?
How long does the process take?
How many artist today are using this method?

The Digital Stone Project written by William V. Ganis explains the digital processing through the workshops around the world. The DSP's 10,00 square foot workshop is mainly what William discusses in this article. You see how the sculptures are made and the processing of it all. Although these machines are magnificent they have a down fall like any other technology. You can create an entire sculpture but you cannot create everything from it. At the end the artist has to go in by hand and finish all the little details. You can scan in human figures into these machines and form a realistic look for your sculpture. These workshops are now scattered around the world in colleges, universities, and personal studios helping artists to create their dream like work.
How much does the workshops cost to engineer?
How long is the prep work to start working?
How much energy does these workshops use a day?

Ars Ex Machina Digital Sculpture by William V. Ganis talks about the RP which is basically a 3D printer, RP stands for rapid prototyping. This machine was to create Kenneth Snelson's atom I and Keith Browns Shoal. It also talks about the controversy of using the technology in a form of art. The positive feedback about digital sculpting is being able to share the work across the globe. Artist are also saving when shipping across international boarders and less money on materials. “Intersculpt” biennials started out small in 1993 by Ars Mathematica, and in 2003 it grew bigger and now has venues in multiple universities.
How many artist use a RP machine?
Will there be more RP machines in universities and schools all over?
How many other exhibitions use the RP machine?

Formtography, The Digital Stone Project, and Ars Ex Machina Digital Sculpture explains, informs, and compares all the digital sculpting methods. They give information on the history of the digital sculpture world. Each article leads you to the next step in processing the digital aspect of the three-dimensional world in art. While reading these articles I found that starting with formtography their was a sequential pattern in this process. Also by reading these articles I saw the step by step process that the artists have to take to complete a finished work.

It seems to be fun and crazy shaped especially with the colors. I feel that the shape could have been more complex.

I really like the Idea and the finished piece, especially the mouth. I don't really care for the scraped texture.

TITLE: Animation Mother (Black & White Version) -- Meats Meier

PERIOD: 2008

The complexity of the piece is amazing, i love the detail. I just wish it could come out looking like that, it seems to only be digital which i don't like.

TITLE: Dragon Throne 3D Digital Sculpture -- Marco Valenzuela

My favorite is how it shows the process to get the Dragon. I didn't like that it was playing so fast

Male Anatomy Study (Digital Sculpture) Turntable -- David Lally

TITLE: "Eternal Winter: The Journey" -- Gabriel Chiang

TITLE:?

This piece is awesome I love the proportion and anatomy of the figure. I do wish it would show the penis, why make it and blur it out? Its so cool, he is just like " WhAt, you don't know about me"

TITLE: Death of the Centaur -- Scott Eaton
I like how he showed through the centaur's skin to its mussels, but i feel it could be more detailed. I also liked the different stages it goes through how it looks like a illustration, to a #d digital piece to the actual sculpture.

TITLE: Ecorche study -- Scott Eaton
I think that this is a cool piece, it is wild what he does with the figure, it as if the model was skinless. I wish he would add a little something extra.

TITLE: Ballerina figure sculpture -- Scott Eatson
This is a funny piece, and it has a matching yet ironic title

http://www.scott-eaton.com/category/experiments
The glass table with the water drop was amazing, i really hope this will soon be an option to buy for the everyday home. It would be cooler if it continued to drop.

I love the little guy, he so crazy looking. I feel it would be funnier if it was a girl and put it in high heals.

TITLE: Hephaestus -- Scott Eaton
The piece has a sum what old look to it, as if it was from hundreds of years ago. i feel like he could have done something with the eyes though. I really enjoy the hair!

TITLE: Winged Dragon -- Scott Eaton
I feel that this is one of his best pieces, I feel everything about it is awesome, especially the dragon above, it's very mystical. the only thing is i wish the wings were not so angel like.

 TITLE: Ibod -- Scott Eaton
He is great at getting the figure right, but i believe the best part of the whole thing is the title ibod. The sculpture is good i just don't get the pose with the title.

TITLE: Millon De Crotone - after Edme Dumont -- Scott eaton
His work really show that he knows the body. Its funny the sculptures position is if he was splitting the wood with his bare arms. I don't get the concept of the the piece but I find it interesting.

TITLE: Moebius-Helix -- Tom Longtin
I love the colors used in the model, it has a great flow and design. I think it would be better as a hanging piece (or even a light) as a real sculpture. I feel that the material used would make or break the piece

TITLE: Beginning -- Lee, Aries 李福華
I would not look at this sculpture and think that it started out digital, which I like. I don't really get how the piece got its title. It's not a design that i would look at in amazement, but i think the size is what make the piece.
